Once the deal begins, each player receives a card face up. The dealer then deals the first three community cards, face up, to the entire group. A pot is made up of all the bets made by all players in the deal. At the end of the betting interval, a showdown occurs. This is when each player displays his or her best hand. For example, if a pair of aces and a pair of jacks tie, the aces are the lowest card and the jacks are the second highest.

As the hand progresses, more bets are placed. When all of the players have checked, the betting interval ends. During this interval, the dealer “burns” one card from the top of the deck. He or she then has the last right to shuffle.
The second most popular hand is a straight flush. This is a straight of five consecutive cards of the same suit. Alternatively, a five-of-a-kind is a hand of five consecutive cards of different suits. Lastly, a full house is a hand containing two pairs.
Most poker variations have a system of hand rankings. These ranks are used to determine the odds of making the highest possible hand. Since the rank of each hand is inversely proportional to its mathematical frequency, the hands with higher odds are more likely to win.
